SERGIO ESPINOZA, Producer and Artistic Director, plays the music of his homeland of Peru with spirit, joy and remarkable technical skill. A classically trained violinist, Sergio studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Lima, Peru. An accomplished flautist, Sergio plays many styles of Peruvian flutes, including sikus, and kenas. He also plays the mandolin and the charango.
Sergio's passion for the tradional music of the Andean peoples was handed down by his parents, who, along with many other family members, perform in the Peruvian Music and Dance troupe Pacha. Sergio performed with Pacha for 14 years as they toured Peru, Columbia, Spain, France and Germany.
Sergio taught music in Lima for seven years. He worked with children from the elementary grades through high school, and also trained teachers in the field of music education.
After coming to the United States in 1991, Sergio toured the U.S. and Europe for over 10 years with various groups, performing concerts and presenting workshops and lectures.
In 2003, Sergio formed InkasWasi Peru, bringing together musicians from several countries of South American to perform the music of the indigenous peoples of the Andes Mountains. Says Sergio, "There is a quote I read: 'Nothing comes true until it's first a dream'...and this has been my dream."
